Esthetician Requirements

An esthetician is a licensed professional who provides certain skin care services. They may perform facials, waxing and other spa treatments. In each state there is a board of cosmetology through which every esthetician must be licensed. The esthetician requirements vary from state to state. In some states like Nevada, the requirement is 600 hours of training with an accredited facility. In other states the requirement may be longer. It all depends on the regulations set by the board. There are also different requirements for cosmetologists, hair stylists, massage therapists and manicurists.

There are various types of licenses. For example you can be an apprentice esthetician, a basic esthetician or a master esthetician. The difference between these is the level of education, experience and skill. Master estheticians have completed the most training and are able to do the most procedures. In addition to skin care and hair removal they may also work with aromatherapy, massage, laser skin rejuvenation, chemical peels and more. Before becoming a master in this or any other field you must start at the beginning and work your way up.

You may wonder whether a master esthetician program is worth the additional time and effort. For many professionals the answer is yes. Depending on where you work and what your career goals are the master program can be ideal for you. However not everyone decides to go all the way. Even a job as a basic esthetician can be satisfying and lucrative. Not only that, but the education and training can be quite challenging. Once you've successfully completed the basic program and obtained employment you can consider whether or not continuing your education is right for you.

To learn more about the esthetician requirements in your state, contact your state board of cosmetology. You can often view the information you need on their website. If you don't know the web address of your state board, it can be found using a search engine like Yahoo or Google. After you know the requirements you can start searching for an accredited educational program and thinking more about the career direction you want to take. Admissions advisors and career counselors who work with school cosmetology programs can answer your questions and help you choose the path that is right for you.
